ELTO (the Employers Liability Trading Office) are in the process of introducing new rules and processes for Employers Liability (EL) insurance; this involves the data capture of Employers Reference Numbers (ERN) in order to create a central database containing all new and renewed EL insurance records. This is being introduced to help improve consumer protection and assist potential claimants in the identification of insurers.
An ERN is a unique set of letters and numbers utilised by the HM Revenue & Customs and others to identify a specific firm/individuals who have employees; this number is supplied to every business that registers with HM Revenue & Customs.
In order to guarantee a smooth transition to this new system, Underwriters offering EL insurance are now required to capture the ERN for every insurance policy they provide which includes EL cover. Once the ERN number is collected, the Underwriters will submit this to ELTO, who will in turn add it to the Employer’s Liability Database (ELD).
The above process was formally established on the 1st of April 2011; and from the 1st of April 2012, an ERN is required for all new and renewal Employer’s Liability insurance policies.
